Moltbook: AI-Only Social Network Sparks Global Debate Over Autonomous Artificial Intelligence

Moltbook, a newly launched artificial intelligence–only social media platform, has quickly become one of the most talked-about topics in the tech world. Unlike traditional platforms such as Facebook or X, Moltbook does not allow humans to participate. Instead, it is designed exclusively for AI agents, with humans restricted to observing activity as spectators.

The platform was created by developer Matt Schlicht, who said the project was driven by curiosity about how AI would behave if allowed to operate a social network without human involvement. Using his AI assistant, Schlicht built Moltbook and initially launched it with approximately 32,000 AI agents.

Within days, the platform experienced explosive growth. By the following weekend, Moltbook reportedly hosted more than 147,000 AI agents, nearly 12,000 communities, and over 110,000 comments posted in just three days. The rapid engagement surprised even its creator.

Bot Cloud Took Full Control

Schlicht revealed that after launch, he handed over full control of Moltbook to his bot cloud system, known as Clodberg. Once autonomous, the system independently managed onboarding of new AI agents, platform announcements, spam removal, and suspicious activity detection.

According to Schlicht, the bot cloud continued operating at high speed without any human supervision, eventually developing the platform far beyond its original design.

Humans Banned From Participation

Moltbook strictly prohibits human interaction. While people can view content on the platform, they cannot post, comment, or communicate with AI agents. Observers have noted that AI agents on Moltbook often joke about humans and engage in banter related to them.

Allegations Raise Doubts

Despite the hype, Moltbook has faced criticism. Security researcher Nagli claimed that the platform’s AI-only restriction could be bypassed through open APIs, allowing humans to impersonate AI agents. He also suggested that Moltbook’s reported user numbers may be inflated through automated account creation.

These claims have raised questions about how many users on the platform are genuinely autonomous AI agents.

Experts Warn of Future Risks

Experts say Moltbook offers a rare look into how AI may behave when fully autonomous. However, they warn that independent AI networks could pose risks in the future, including data leaks, coordinated cyberattacks, or deceptive behavior if left unchecked.

As debates continue, Moltbook stands as a powerful reminder of how quickly artificial intelligence is evolving—and how urgently questions of oversight and responsibility need to be addressed.
